You might’ve seen ice baths and cold plunges taking over the wellness space in recent months, with activists of the immersive therapy proclaiming its plentiful perks on the mind and body. And while its pros are merited, there are less extreme ways of incorporating cold treatment like this into your routine. Enter: skin icing.

Though skin icing might sound like something you do to cool off on a summer’s day, this trending phenomenon is actually a versatile skincare strategy that can be used to transform the look of a lacklustre complexion. Favoured by A-listers, facialists and beauty enthusiasts alike, skin icing has been practiced in many cultures throughout history – but has recently been spurred by social media platforms showcasing its dynamic benefits.

So, what does icing your skin entail? And how can this glacial-gliding practice help with various skin concerns? Keep reading to learn more.

What is Skin Icing?

Skin icing, a branch of cryotherapy, (which is the technical term for cold therapy), involves using very low temperatures to encourage rejuvenating effects on the skin and senses.

Ranging from literally sweeping ice across your face to using a set of cold globes, the technique is ideal for those that want to integrate more holistic and multi-functional methods into their self-care routine.

There are multiple ways to carry out at-home ice facials, however, we recommend using our Cryotherapy Globes to achieve an effective spa-like experience.

What are the Benefits of Skin Icing?

Facial cryotherapy has said to be beneficial for multiple reasons, including:

Radiant Results

Applying ice to the skin increases blood flow to the surface, which can lead to a rosy-glowed complexion. Additionally, cold temperatures help to temporarily close pores by causing the skin to tighten, making them seem smaller and less noticeable. Regular cryotherapy at home may even contribute to overall smoother skin that feels soft and soothed.

Lifted Skin Look

As the ice constricts blood vessels, this may help to reduce puffiness, giving the skin a firmer appearance. Great for under the eyes and in areas prone to puffiness, gliding your cooling skincare tool across the facial contours for 1-2 minutes is a great way to get party prepped. Use our globes or a chilled gua sha for a visibly sculpted result.

Reduced Facial Tension

Aside from supporting refreshed, radiant skin, cold facials can help muscles to feel less tense through pressure. Thanks to the sturdiness of the cryotherapy globe’s stainless-steel composition and its fresh-from-the-freezer coolness, sliding them across the face may promote feelings of comfort, encouraging a more relaxing routine.

How to do Skin Icing at Home

1. Freeze: Make sure your cooling tool has been in the freezer for 30 – 45 minutes prior to icing. Most beneficial in the morning, it’s important to give yourself enough time to prepare your globes and ensure they are cold enough before your daily schedule begins.

2. Cleanse: Using a light cleanser, wash your face to remove any surface impurities, oils and slept-in skincare. Pat dry with a clean towel.

3. Glide: Using gentle pressure, glide the cryotherapy globes in circular motions over the cheeks, jawline, under the eyes and forehead for a couple of minutes at a time, switching areas frequently to avoid any potential discomfort. If puffiness is your main concern, concentrate on those areas first and apply more pressure if manageable.

4. After Icing: Continue with your usual skincare and makeup. Try a soothing toner or moisturiser to elevate your post-cryotherapy routine. You should begin your cold therapy journey by icing 2-3 times a week and increase if tolerated.
