How to Make Self-Care a Daily Habit (Not Just a One-Day Treat!)

In a world that moves fast, self-care can often feel like a luxury. Something reserved for special occasions or rare pockets of free time. But with World Mental Health Day on October 10, it's a timely reminder to make space for our well-being beyond a single day on the calendar.

This year's World Mental Health Day theme, "Lived Experiences Heard," highlights the importance of listening to real experiences over generic advice. At ESPA, we also believe there is value in learning from the people who practise care every day. So, we asked ESPA's Training Director, Abigail James, to share the simple rituals and practises she turns to in her own life.

As Abigail puts it:

"As a therapist, care begins with how we welcome someone, before the treatment even starts. So many people spend their days organising, making decisions and caring for others. Often, they need to feel that someone is looking after them for a change."

At ESPA, we believe well-being should be part of your everyday, not just an afterthought. With a few mindful moments and a little consistency, it's possible to turn self-care into a daily ritual creates time to slow down and look after yourself.

What Makes a Good Self-Care Habit?

A good self-care habit fits seamlessly into your life. It doesn't require hours of your time or a dramatic routine overhaul, the most effective habits are often the smallest:

  • A daily skincare ritual using nourishing products
  • Five minutes of mindful breathing or guided meditation
  • A short walk and stretch to ease into the day
  • A moment of stillness with a warm herbal tea
  • Unplugging from your screen for 10 minutes
  • Taking a deep breath and applying a pulse point oil before a busy day
The key is consistency and intention. These simple actions ground you, recenter your focus, and create space for calm in the chaos.

An Expert's Own Ritual

When things feel overwhelming, even ESPA's own experts lean on simple, repeatable practises. Abigail shares hers:

"I journal. Putting my thoughts on paper helps me create a little space and find perspective. I use three simple questions: 'What am I grateful for today? How could I simplify one thing? And what could I stop doing?' Try taking a few quiet minutes to write one answer to each. It's a gentle way to notice what's good, recognise what you need and give yourself permission to put something down."

Bringing Spa-Level Care Into Everyday Life

"We can bring little moments of that care into things we already do. Listen to soft music while putting your make-up on, take a few extra minutes to massage your face with your skincare, or make time each week for a nourishing hair mask. Notice the textures, aromas and how the touch feels — scent in particular has a powerful effect on mood. These simple rituals give us a moment to slow down and enjoy looking after ourselves."

How To Build a Self-Care Routine That Works For You

  1. Start Small. A few drops of Positivity Bath & Body Oil after your morning shower, or applying your Optimal Skin Pro-Serum slowly and mindfully before bed.
  2. Be Consistent. It's not about perfection; it's about showing up for yourself, every day.
  3. Schedule the Time. Add self-care to your calendar like any other priority, or anchor it to your evening wind-down.
  4. Balance Mind, Body & Skin. Stretch gently in the morning, or take five quiet minutes for a mask on Sundays.

Abigail's Own Rituals for Inner Calm

"I love giving myself a face, neck and décolleté massage with an ESPA Optimal Skin Cleansing Oil, or Cica Cleansing Balm. I also love a warm bath with Positivity Bath & Body Oil — the scent makes me feel happy. Soft lighting, soft music, soak until my skin goes wrinkly!"

Your Self-Care Questions, Answered

How do bath and body rituals help improve daily self-care habits?

A warm soak with a scented oil, or a few minutes of mindful massage, gives you a clear start and end point for care. Focusing on scent, warmth, and touch can help turn an everyday routine into a deliberate moment to pause, making the habit far easier to stick to than a well-intended but frustratingly abstract intention to "relax more."

How can I build a routine around a luxury skincare experience?

Pick one step in your existing routine. Whether it is cleansing, applying a serum, or a weekly mask, you need to slow it down deliberately. Use both hands, take a few mindful breaths, notice the texture and scent. Forget extra products or time, all that's required is more intention with what you already use.

What does meaningful everyday self-care look like?

It's less about grand gestures and more about small, repeatable moments. A mindful skincare step and a few minutes of quiet creates a ritual that creates a welcome moment of pause in your day-to-day.

Begin Today. One Moment at a Time

Self-care doesn't need to be reserved for special occasions. Not International Self-Care Day. Not World Mental Health Day. Not any single date. It's not selfish or indulgent. It's essential, and it's yours to define.
