Choosing indigenous fruit and vegetables means they’ve been harvested more recently and travelled fewer miles from soil to plate. Their nutrient value is therefore far higher, which is much more beneficial for our bodies.

Wherever your travels take you, choose to eat foods local to your destination. Not only will this help you further enhance your vacation by embracing your surroundings, but it can also be beneficial for our wider wellbeing.

Alongside this, how we eat while we’re away can improve our health, advises Louise. Not tied by the busy schedules we are at home, slow down and take time to enjoy your food. Chew every mouthful properly (a good 30 or 40 times for many foods). This will help you re-connect with your body and re-establish how much food it actually needs to function.

You may also find yourself eating less on holiday, says Louise, yet you still feel far more energized than you did before your vacation. This is because increased exposure to natural light while away makes you less reliant on food as an energy source.

Our bodies are so clever!
